Posting general course information, course expectations and policies is good practice. It gives students (and parents) a roadmap of where their learning is going and what they need to do to be successful.  In Canvas, the Syllabus page is used for this.

What is the Syllabus?

The syllabus holds valuable information. Teachers use it to include course criterion and expectations. It is where you can post your course description, a brief introduction, class guidelines, weekly reminders, teacher contact details, and other important information. Students may use it to preview the contents of a course and refer to grading policies.

Let's face it - course syllabus is an important part of class design.

How does SCASD want me to use the Syllabus page?

SCASD teachers are required to use the Syllabus page as a repository for their course expectations. The Syllabus link must also be included in the course navigation (see Module 4, Lesson 1).  For 6th grade, the Syllabus page can be used to share an overview of what will be learned, rather than a formal syllabus

The required components on your Syllabus page are:

      • Teacher contact information at the top of the document or information section
      • Course Description, a brief 2-3 sentence statement (You can use what we have in course guides/curriculum documents.)
      • Grading Practices such as coursework, class participation, tests, quizzes, late work policy
      • Link to Academic Integrity Policy Links to an external site.

How can I post my course Syllabus?

Let's first take a look at the Syllabus tab.  By default it includes:

  • Description
  • Course Summary which are the published modules in your course
  • Course Calendar

Already have a Syllabus and course information in a separate document, like a Google file? No prob!  As discussed in Module 1, Lesson 2, embedding a Google Doc might be the easiest way to add and keep this information current in your course. Then there is only one place to keep it updated, in the original Google document!  (Also see directions for Embedding a Google Doc in the RCE Links to an external site..)
So now it's time for you to practice in your sandbox.  Use the directions below to edit your Syllabus page.  Make sure to uncheck the Show Course Summary -- a district preference.
